Course Description


PREREQUISITES:

None, though it is important to be able to read and write effectively in standard English and to learn through reading.


TEXTS:


OBJECTIVES:

It is the purpose of this course to assist you in gaining familiarity, to a degree, with the history of the United States from settlement through the Civil War. In the process, you will develop an understanding of the nature and uses of history. You will discover where much of modern America has its roots, and you will encounter themes and ideas which affect America today. You will be able to discern alternatives to the development of the country, discuss the reasons those alternatives were not taken, and understand how those same factors affect the nation at present.

Lecture, Discussion, Reading, Document analysis


METHODS OF EVALUATION:

Three tests, abstracts and evaluations of articles, and a final exam.
