SHELDON HANFT TRAVEL AWARD

for Established Scholars in British Studies

sponsored by the

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE ON BRITISH STUDIES

The Southern Conference on British Studies is pleased to solicit applications for the Sheldon Hanft Travel Award for 2010 from scholars in British Studies.  The award carries a grant of $1,000 and commemorates the work of Professor Sheldon Hanft of Appalachian State University with the Carolinas Symposium on British Studies, which became conjoined with the SCBS in 2002.  It is made each year on a competitive basis to support research in British Studies (including the history and culture of the Empire and Commonwealth as well as of the British Isles) which requires extended travel from the researcher’s home base.  Awards alternate between established scholars and graduate students, with those for even-numbered years designated for established scholars without geographic restriction and awards for odd-numbered years designated for graduate students enrolled within the SCBS region.

Since the purpose of a Hanft Travel Award is to assist in defraying the cost of research travel, the award may not be applied to other expenses.  Travel funded by the awards may be international or within the United States or another country so long as it furthers research in some aspect of British Studies.  Recipients will be reimbursed after completion of their travel and presentation of documented travel expenditures to the SCBS Secretary-Treasurer.

Eligibility for established scholars applying for the Hanft Travel Award requires current membership in the SCBS, and applications for the 2010 award must be submitted no later than 15 September 2009.  A complete application will consist of a cover letter, a description of the substance and significance of the research project to which the award will be applied, and a copy of the applicant’s CV.  All materials should be sent to:
