 Southern Conference on British Studies

The SCBS is the Southern regional branch of the North American Conference on British Studies. It meets annually, customarily in the Fall in conjunction with the Southern Historical Association. The meeting comprises two and a half days of paper sessions with two or more panels running concurrently. The organization also hosts a reception for attendees and their guests. To see the most recent program of the organization, click here Program.

The SCBS construes British Studies very broadly to include the history, literature, arts, and culture of the Home Islands and the Empire and Commonwealth. It welcomes into membership any one interested in such subjects, whether or not he/she pursues them professionally.

Dues for the SCBS are $10.00 annually for students, $15.00 for non-students; and $300 for a lifetime membership. As a courtesy, the Southern Historical Association extends the option of affiliate membership (non-voting) to members of the SCBS for $7.00. For those interested, membership in the SHA’s European History Section is available for annual dues of $17.00. Either of these SHA dues may be paid through the SCBS treasurer.

Annual Conference

The Southern Conference for British Studies usually meets in conjunction with the Southern Historical Association at its annual meeting. The 2009 meeting will be held in conjunction with both the SHA and the North American Conference on British Studies.  The meeting will take place November 6-8 in Louisville, KY.  For more information regarding the meeting, including conference registration and hotel room information, please visit the NACBS website.  As this is a joint conference between the NACBS and the SCBS, there is no separate registration required for the SCBS meeting this year.  Participants and others planning to attend are encouraged to book hotel rooms early to ensure availability.  The Southern Historical Association webpage contains more information about the conference site.
