    CSCE 101 COURSE POLICIES
Disabled Student Policy:  If you have a learning or physical disability which might affect your performance in this class, please inform your instructor as soon as possible and Mr. Lynwood Watts, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, in order to verify your status and provide you with appropriate assistance.

Attendance:    According to University Policy, or no more than 2 absents.  Further absences will be reflected on the final grade.  Students are cautioned to maintain attendance records. All tests that are missed by students will be made up during the next class period prior to the return of the graded tests. Failure to do so will result in the instructor setting up the guide lines for a test makeup.

Electronic Devices in Class:  All cellular phones/ pagers must be on a pulsating basis, and no rings of any sort will be tolerated in the class. Recorders are allowed in class in order to assist you in taking notes, or in recording the lecture.

Incomplete Policy:  Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as to the reason that the students work is incomplete. There is no automatic incomplete, and the student must be passing and have completed a significant portion of the course.

Objectives: This course is designed to familiarize students with computer fundamentals and the impact computerization is having on  society. This will be done through an examination of the history of computers, as well as an in-depth view of how the computer processes data through the Input/Output cycle, including the various methods of storing and retrieving data. This course will also introduce students to the Internet through the use of Netscape Communicator to browse the Net. In addition, students will be exposed to the various types of Application Software currently available, and will be required to learn how to use three major tools such as: Word 97, Excel 97 and Access 97. Students will be introduced to each of these tools by the instructor of the course and will then be assigned projects to complete during the semester. Each student is to purchase two 3 1/4" Floppy Disks to use in the Labs to back up their work.

Assignments: The syllabus details all assignments and important dates. You are responsible for completing these assignments by the date of the assignment, so keep up with the syllabus. Thus, all readings will be done before class. You must turn in all projects to earn a passing grade for the class. A penalty will be assessed for any assignment which is turned in late. The severity of the penalty increases daily.

Tests: You are expected to take all tests on the date scheduled. Failure to do so will result in a grade of "F". If there is a legitimate reason for your not being able to take a test on the assigned date, you need to see me about the problem before the test (so that arrangements can possibly be made). If not, makeup exams may still be possible, but they will be given only at my discretion.

Grades: Grades will not be posted nor discussed over the phone. The USC system has a procedure for allowing students to receive grade information via TIPS or the WEB; if you have any questions about this system, please contact the Registrar's Office. You may also view your final test (with the course grade noted) in my office during normal work hours (just give me a few days after the final exam to grade them). You can access daily grades via the Blackboard.

Cheating: Cheating is broadly defined as presenting work to be graded as yours but which is not your own (this definition entails plagiarism). Cheating will NOT be tolerated or excused.

Classroom Etiquette: You should be ready to start class when the class is scheduled to begin. You should show respect for (but you don't have to believe/agree with) the comments and questions offered by me, guest lecturers, and your fellow students. You are expected to think critically about the material we cover in class; ask pertinent questions about any assigned reading or lecture material that you find confusing or erroneous.

Withdrawing from class: If you decide to no longer attend class, it is critical that you officially withdraw from class to avoid a failing grade. Please see me; I will be glad to help you. *************************************************************************************************
