An SDT is a record of a student's growth and development outside the classroom. Growth
and development are usually acquired through partcipation in campus and community
activities and/or experiences. At USC Sumter, these developmental activities have been
categorized into nine broad areas of emphasis:
- Communication Skills
- Community Service
- Critical Thinking Skills
- Cultural/Fine Arts
- Leadership Development
- Moral Development
- Physical Development
- Social & Interpersonal Skills Development
- Volunteer Service to the University
Benefits
- Used in conjunction with the academic transcipt, it provides a more complete picture
of a student's college experience. Learning and personal growth experiences outside the
classroom are essential for development of the "whole" person
- Human Resource directors have stated that they would value as SDT in the hiring
process. A diverse package of non-classroom experiences could make the difference
in an employer's selection of one student instead of another for a particular job.
- Scholarship and Awards committees review and use outside classroom experiences
as an element in selecting scholarship and award recipents.
- Graduate schools may also review a student's outside classroom experiences as a
part of the admission process.
- Most importantly, the SDT provides a student with a record of how specific time
was spent towards personal development. More than a tool for others, the SDT is a tool
that can be used by a student to guide them in seeking activities that will provide
diversity in their learning and growth experiences. The SDT system validates that
extra-curricular experiences are important, just as an academic transcript
validates that classroom experiences are important. Self-improvement is the goal
of the SDT system.
