Spoken Word Features Gullah Storyteller
The South Carolina Center for Oral Narration at USC Sumter sponsored storyteller and local historian and preservationist, Eugenia P. Deas of McClellanville, South Carolina October 3, 2007. Deas is an 83-year-old storyteller whose memory and experiences gave a glimpse of Gullah culture and heritage that awakened the desire to glean appreciation and understanding of Gullah culture in its listeners. South Carolina’s culture is rich, beautiful, and harsh, and every effort to present a component of its culture is valuable to the Sumter community and beyond. Deas’ program provided powerful entertainment as well as invaluable knowledge to adults and school children alike.
Celebration of the Spoken Word: Gullah Storyteller Eugenia P. Deas satisfies and remains consistent to the mission of the Center, which is to document, preserve and present the oral tradition in its many genres. The event is sponsored by the South Carolina Center for Oral Narration, the USC Sumter Cultural Events Committee and the
Sumter County Cultural Commission, which receives support from the South Carolina Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding for the program has been provided by a generous grant from the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation.

Big Wednesday Is Coming Soon!
The USC Sumter Alumni Association is gearing up to sponsor its annual Big Wednesday Classic Golf Tournament and Tailgate Party on November 14, 2007 along with Russell and Jeffcoat Realtors, Inc. This year will make its 14th year of golf and tailgating for Clemson and Carolina fans alike.

The day will begin with a three-person Captain’s Choice golf tournament at Sunset Country Club. Players will be able to choose whether they are representing Clemson or Carolina before the shotgun start at 9:30 am. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place and there will be a hole-in-one contest again this year.
The Tailgate Party will begin at 6:00 pm in the Nettles Gym and Auditorium on the USC Sumter campus with dinner served by Outback Steakhouse. Guests will have the chance to meet “Cocky” and “The Tiger” as well as get the chance to win door prizes. Raffles for a pair of tickets to the Clemson/Carolina game and a football and visor signed by Steve Spurrier will be held while tailgaters enjoy entertainment provided by DJ Francis Hanna.
Big Wednesday was established by the USC Sumter Alumni Association as a way to raise scholarship money for students. With USC Sumter reintroducing its intercollegiate athletics this year, some of the money raised from this year’s event will provide athletic scholarships for Fire Ant players.
Tickets are expected to sell quickly. Anyone interested in playing golf, attending the tailgate party or both can contact Erica McLeod in the Alumni Office at (803)938-3851 for more information or visit the website at www.uscsumter.edu.
