The 2% Solution

Climate Change Webcast

USC Sumter hosted an interactive discussion of climate change solutions and a free viewing of Focus the Nation’s national, live, interactive webcast called The 2% SOLUTION on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 on the USC Sumter Campus. Focus the Nation is a nonprofit group dedicated to increasing public understanding of climate change issues and working towards climate solutions. To hold global warming to the low end of 3-4 degrees F will require cuts in global warming pollution in the developed countries by more than 80% below current levels by 2050. Put another way, we need to cut roughly 2% of current emission levels a year for the next forty years. The webcast revolved around the question: can we as a nation get on to this path, and cut global warming pollution 2% a year for the next decade? It included Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins and green jobs pioneer Van Jones and youth climate leaders, who discussed global warming solutions. Audience members were able to vote on their preferred solutions with cell phone voting. The webcast was shown simultaneously to hundreds of college, civic and church groups across the country.

Homecoming Fast Approaching

With a 60’s theme in place, the Homecoming committee has been hard at work under the guidance of Alumni Director Erica McLeod to make positive changes for an exciting Homecoming event this year. New activities incorporate a week of events planned specifically for students including a Pie-in-the-Face Day, USC Sumter Idol, as well as a new event for this year, the nomination and naming of the USC Sumter Homecoming King and Queen. Other events include a bonfire, dance, and a family tailgate party complete with hamburgers, hotdogs and face painting before the Fire Ants game on Saturday. The Committee has also planned an outdoor Movie Night to wrap up events on Saturday night. Look for more information to come in February!
