Students Rank High Nationwide

The Business Strategy Game
Congratulations are in order for the co-managers of D Bomb Baby (Company D) from Professor Hendrikus van Bulck’s Strategies class who recently participated in the international online Business Strategy Game (BSG). According to BSG's Greg Stappenbeck, 2,991 teams participated from 193 colleges and universities worldwide. The students earned a Global Top 100 ranking for their company's BSG Online performance during the week of February 18 -24, 2008. The ranking was based on the following performance criteria: Overall Game-To-Date Score, their overall score of 107.5 tied for the 24th best overall score performance of the week worldwide.

The BSG is an online exercise where class members are divided into teams and assigned the task of running an athletic footwear company in head-to-head competition against companies managed by other class members. Company operations parallel those of actual athletic footwear companies. Just as in the real-world, companies compete in a global market arena, selling branded and private-label athletic footwear in four geographic regions — Europe-Africa, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

The First Jack Doyle Storytelling Festival was held Thursday, February 21, 2008 and Friday, February 22, 2008. The Festival is a collaborative effort among the South Carolina Center for Oral Narration, USC Sumter Division of Arts and Letters and Sumter School District 17 to bring storytelling to life not only for the general public but also for area school children who may not have been previously exposed to this genre. Fifth-graders from a variety of schools were treated to the stories of Bobby Jones, Lisa Eister and Sheila Keaise and some also were able to tour the campus for a first-hand look at college life.
