Walking Trail Dedicated

Walking at work has never been easier with the new walking trail! The University of South Carolina Sumter and Sumter County Active Lifestyles (SCAL) unveiled the new one-mile walking trail on campus Wednesday, March 7, 2007 with a ribbon cutting in the Founders Grove. The walking trail is marked with posts and arrows on the ground to signify the route and is open to USC Sumter employees, residents, Wednesday Walkers, etc.
Food Court Wins Golden Spatula Award

The Food Court is an award winning restaurant. The USC Sumter Food Court received the Golden Spatula Award from WLTX News Channel 19 on March 22, 2007 for receiving a 100 on their DHEC inspection. Congratulations Debbie and Stephanie!

Failmezger Named Employee of the Quarter
Jean Failmezger, counselor in the Office of Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Veterans Affairs, was selected as the Outstanding Staff Member of the Quarter for the period December 2006 through February 2007.
As this quarter's honoree, Failmezger will receive an engraved plaque, a cash award intended to cover the cost of dinner for two, her name on the wall plaque prominently displayed in the first floor lobby of the Administration Building, an automatic nomination for consideration for the annual H.D. Barnett, Sr., Outstanding Staff Award, and a reserved parking place on the Sumter campus until the next honoree is announced. The Outstanding Staff Member of the Quarter award is supported by funds provided by the Sumter Partnership of the USC Educational Foundation.
Climate Crisis?
Assistant Professor Jeffrey Steinmetz has received a grant to show the film "An Inconvenient Truth" on Thursday, April 19, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 122 of the Anderson Library. The film will be shown from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and will be followed by a question and answer session with USC Sumter Biology faculty members including Steinmetz, Steve Bishoff, Pearl Fernandes and John Logue from 8:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Drs. Rebecca Hillman and Charles Cook were recognized for their joint solution of Problem 818, "A Fibonacci-like Sequence" in The College Mathematics Journal, Vol 38, No. 1, January 2007.
Dr. Rebecca Hillman was recognized for her solution of Problem B-1008, "An Odd Type System," in The Fibonacci Quarterly, Vol 44, No. 3, August 2006. Dr. Cook's independent solution to this problem was highlighted in the same journal.
Dr. Charles K. Cook, USC Sumter, emeritus mathematics and A.G. Shannon, Warrane College, The University of New South Wales, Australia . "Generalized Fibonacci and Lucas Sequences with Pascal Type Arrays" in "Notes on Number Theory and Discrete Mathematics," Volume 12, No. 4, 2006.
Dr. Eric Reisenauer, Associate Professor of History and the Williams-Brice-Edwards Professor of Humanities, received approval for a sabbatical leave during the 2008 Spring Semester. Reisenauer will use the time to finish a manuscript and prepare it for publication.
Dr. Richard Bell has been appointed to another four-year term as Chair of the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education, effective July 1, 2007, at USC Sumter.
