Dr. David Decker, Associate Professor of History, will spend four weeks in Africa’s largest country,
Sudan, a geographic area nearly one-third the size of the United States with over one million square
miles.
While Dr. Decker will undoubtedly have sightings of wild game, sprawling landscapes and people
of great beauty and traditions, his search will be for history.
Sudan: the Land and the People will be published in June 2005, by photographer Michael Freeman
and authors Victoria Butler and Timothy Carney, former accredited US Ambassador to Sudan. This group
asked Decker to join them on photo expedition to Kordofan Province, Sudan, a region at the heart of
Decker’s previous research on 19th century Kordofan. His expertise will be helpful in facilitating
work on the book and he will be able to renew contacts for continuing his historical research.
While amid the photographic adventure and quest for history, Decker will explore possible academic
linkages between USC Sumter and the University of Kordofan per request from the Sudanese Embassy in
Washington, D.C. The trip, a unique opportunity for Decker and USC Sumter, is scheduled to take place
in the very near future.
