Third Army Welcome

In 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) recommendations which not only kept Shaw Air Force Base open, but expanded the base by more than 800 jobs.

Shaw is home to the Air Force’s largest combat wing of F-16’s and also hosts the Headquarters of Ninth Air Force, the air component of Central Command Air Forces. Shaw will now serve as Headquarters to the Third Army, the Army’s equivalent of the Ninth Air Force, now based at Fort McPherson in Atlanta.
