As an educator, I've also worked for The Ohio State University at Marion, Morningside College, the University of Oregon, the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, and Texas A&M University.

 

Born: April 22, 1947; Bellville, Texas.

 

Parents: Albert Lewis Carpenter and Nina Josephine Orchard Carpenter (both deceased). My father, a veteran of World War II, survived three and one-half years as a Prisoner of War of the Japanese, after which he worked his entire career as a petroleum engineer in the oil industry. My mother's first husband died in combat in China during World War II.

 

Siblings: Two younger sisters. Belinda Ann Carpenter Windham is a Presbyterian minister in Katy, Texas; Rebecca Ruth Carpenter Heindel is a French and music teacher Santa Fe, New Mexico.

 

Marriage: Since 1970 to Margaret Christine Johnson Carpenter. Margy earned her bachelor's degree from Texas Christian University and took graduate work at Ashland University, The Ohio State University, the College of Charleston, The Citadel, and the University of South Carolina prior to earning her master's degree from Francis Marion University. She is a teacher of business and family and consumer sciences at Sumter High School, a job infinitely more difficult than mine.

 

Children and Grandchildren: Christopher Lance Carpenter, born in 1971, graduated from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, worked in the university art gallery, and majored in Business Management. He is employed as a logistics consultant with the C.H. Robinson Company in Columbia, South Carolina. He and his wife, Mary Barhorst Carpenter, reside in Lexington, South Carolina, and are parents of three very exceptional children, Margaret Elaine Carpenter (age 8), Zachary Lance Carpenter (age 6), and Mary Evelyn Carpenter (age 6 months).

Sarah Elizabeth Carpenter (Sally), born in 1975, graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) where she was an officer in Pi Beta Phi sorority, played for the Women's Rugby Team, was a member of the Kite and Key Society, worked in the library, helped charter a College Democrats Club, served as a campus tour guide for the Admissions Office., and majored in Religious Studies. Sally graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law in May 2000, was admitted to the Oregon Bar in September 2000, and works for the Public Defenders State Appeals Division in Salem, Oregon.

 

Church: Margy and I are members of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter; we both are ordained elders and deacons; I am a past president of the board of trustees at our former church and a past moderator of the board of deacons in our current church.

 

High School: Hobbs (New Mexico) High School; I was active in instrumental music; was selected to Boys State in 1964 and selected to All State Symphonic Band in 1964 and 1965; I graduated in 1965, and have been back for two class reunions. At the last one, my classmates voted me the "Snow on the Rooftop" award for the classmate with the grayest hair.

 

College: I attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Corps of Cadets, Army ROTC, and the Texas Aggie Band; I received a B.A. in English in 1970, a B.A. in Mathematics in 1973, and an M.Ed. in Educational Administration in 1974; I also attended the University of Oregon, from which I received a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration in 1977.

 

Military: I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry, U.S. Army, in 1970 and toured Vietnam as an Infantry Platoon Leader in 1971-72; upon return from overseas, I remained active in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 1990 with 20 years of service and the rank of Major.

 

Places I've Lived: As a child, I was an "oil field brat" and lived in company oil camps in Sugar Land, Texas; Rosenberg, Texas; Thompson, Texas; Odessa, Texas; and Stanton, Texas. Though it wasn't in company oil camps, as a child I also lived in College Station, Texas; Midland, Texas; McCamey, Texas; and Hobbs, New Mexico.

 

As an adult, I've lived and worked in College Station, Texas; Hobbs, New Mexico; Ft. Benning, Georgia; Vietnam; Ft. Hood, Texas; Eugene, Oregon; Sioux City, Iowa; Marion, Ohio; and now Sumter, South Carolina.

 

Jobs I've held in my lifetime: Mowing lawns; shoveling horse manure; clearing stones from a farmer's field; oil field worker; library assistant; soldier; convenience store clerk (graveyard shift); beer joint bar tender; job placement counselor; publications editor; English teacher; math teacher; educational researcher; college and university administrator.

 

Hobbies and other assorted pleasures: Stamp and coin collecting; pleasure reading (spy novels and murder mysteries); gardening; attending Southeast Conference football and basketball games; admiring my children's achievements; acting silly as only a grandparent can act with my grandchildren; playing "at" golf; consumption of fine food and wine; visiting relatives in Santa Fe, Hobbs, Houston, Dallas, and Salem; community service; listening to music and attending concerts and art exhibits; managing fire ants; playing bridge with friends; conversing with our two house cats; and helping college students realize their goals and dreams.

My friends call me "Les," and people who get to know me REALLY well eventually find out what my first name is instead of the initial "C."
