There are over 65,000 viruses that can get onto an unprotected computer. Once there, the virus
can be just irritating, or it can cause considerable problems for the user.
USC uses McAfee Antivirus software on all computer systems on the campus to protect
against computer viruses. The network administrator keeps the most current copy of the software
data files available for users.
Note: the following information is only applicable to systems on the USC Sumter campus
How do I update the antivirus dat files on my office computer?
If you have an 'AVUpdate' icon on your desktop, simply double-click that icon and follow the instructions.
If you do not have an 'AVUpdate icon on your desktop, go to Start, Run, type in:
\\uscsumter\sys\public\avupd
and press ENTER, then follow the instructions.
The network administrator will email all USC Sumter users when an update
to the AntiVirus software is available. However, just to be sure your system is protected,
you should run this routine at least once a week. If your system already has the most
current dat files installed, you will be notified and given the opportunity to stop the routine.
How can I check to see if my system has a virus?
If you have a 'Stinger' icon on your desktop, simply double-click that icon.
If you do not have a 'Stinger' icon on your desktop, go to Start, Run, type in:
\\uscsumter\sys\public\stinger /go
and Press ENTER.
The Stinger software will begin to scan your entire hard drive for the latest and worst
viruses (about 40). The scan will take some time, depending upon the speed of your system,
and the number of files you have on it. If Stinger finds a virus, it will attempt to clean or remove
it. Once it is done, a report of what was found (if anything) will be displayed.
