THOMAS L. POWERS, Ph.D.

Professor
History

"MY FELLOW CITIZENS, WE CANNOT ESCAPE HISTORY!"

That is what Abraham Lincoln said. He was right. We might as well try to escape time itself. History is not the past. It is human experience, changing over time from yesterday to today and hinting at the future. It shapes the environment in which we make our life's decisions, from the most routine and superficial to the most consequential. It saturates everything we are and everything we do. History is life. History is not irrelevant.

That's why it's so important to have some understanding of history, of how historical processes have worked, and of how history continues to influence our thinking and our actions. Any good college history course, in addition to introducing you to specific content, should help you toward such understanding.

THOMAS L. (Tom)  POWERS,
Professor of History B.A., University of Richmond, 1969
Ph.D. University of Georgia, 1978
