  • Member of the Board of Trustees of S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics. Appointed to Board of Trustees by S.C. Governor Carroll A. Campbell. Have served as Chairman of Committee on Curriculum and Student Selection, Chairman of Long-Range Planning Committee, and Chairman of Strategic Planning. (1987-2000)
  • Member of the Board of Education for the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina (1991-1997), President 1993-94, and Secretary 1994-1996. 
  • Head of Strategic Planning at The Sumter Catholic High School (TSCHS). Directed the strategic planning effort at TSCHS which began with a year-long program of the development of a school mission statement, program evaluation in six major functional areas, and goal setting throughout the entire school program and its interface with the surrounding Sumter community. Effort entailed organizing and coordinating the work of six committees to enhance the academic, religious, and athletic programs at the school, while strengthening community ties to the school. The Strategic Initiative was developed to meet Diocesan concerns and goals for TSCHS. (1992-1994)
  • Program Director for several workshops of the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS). Programs offered: talks, lab activities, demonstrations, field trips, and a College Bowl. More than 700 high school and middle school students and their teachers attended workshops at USC Sumter in 1981 and 1984 and at USC Columbia in 1989.
  • President of the S.C. Academy of Science (SCAS). Managed the operation of the SCAS which promotes science education and research in South Carolina through its sponsorship of the SCJAS, the S.C. Science Fairs, and SCAS Annual Meeting paper presentations, and its other activities. (1985-1986)
  • Program Director of the South Carolina Academy of Science. Developed and planned the 1985 Annual Meeting of the SCAS to be held on March 28-29, 1985, at USC Columbia. The program contained 300 student and 150 senior scientist research papers, as well as a statewide symposium on the topic of prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy. The symposium featured four nationally known scholars, and was attended by 300 people. (1984-1985)
  • Executive Director of the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science. In charge of all planning/operations, $8,000/yr budget, membership of approximately 1,500 high school students. Formed partnerships between colleges and high schools to take the SCJAS’s two annual workshops, located in high schools, onto South Carolina college campuses. Developed workshops to include a College Bowl (question and answer) and Science Olympics (lab) competitions. Innovations culminated in workshops growth from about 200 to more than 500 participants per workshop. Participation at Annual Meetings at South Carolina colleges increased from 125 students to 225 students giving oral presentations on science research carried out during each year. This work resulted in the SCJAS becoming recognized as one of the "top four" Junior Academies in the United States. (1980-1984)
  • Co-developer of the 1982-83 and 1983-84 USC Sumter Debate Forum that focused on topics of national policy, current events, and life issues. The five (5) debates featured nationally prominent speakers in a debate setting that attracted approximately 300-500 campus and community people.
  • Completed a 12-month Certification Program as a Natural Family Planning Practitioner. Received NFP Practitioner certification from the Creighton University School of Medicine, Division of Allied Health. (1983-1984) [This program is now available through the Pope Paul VI Institute]
  • Publisher of the S.C. Junior Academy of Science NEWSLETTER, which is published four (4) times a year. The SCJAS NEWSLETTER had a circulation of 2000. This circulation reached approximately 1500 high school students and 500 high school, college, and university science teachers. (1980-1983)
  • Served as the representative of the South Carolina Academy of Science to the American Association for the Advancement of Science at the Annual Meeting of the AAAS. (1980-1983)
  • Executive Council member of the South Carolina Academy of Science, Chairman of the High School Relations Committee. (1980-1984)
