C. LESLIE CARPENTER

Regional Campus Dean

"A university should be a place of light, of liberty, and of learning." -- Benjamin Disraeli

Les joined USC Sumter in 1993. He had previously held positions at The Ohio State University at Marion, as assistant dean (chief academic officer), and at Morningside College, as the assistant academic dean.  He holds a master's and two bachelor's degrees from Texas A&M University, and a doctorate from the University of Oregon.

"He who enters a university walks on hallowed ground." -- James Bryant Conant

Les' responsibilities as the chief executive officer of USC Sumter include all elements of the institution.  He takes great satisfaction in representing the interests of the campus to the various elected and appointed officials of the city, county, state, and nation, and especially enjoys interacting with the alumni, friends, and supporters of USC Sumter.  As USC Sumter's principal representative in the community, Les is visible and active in a variety of groups and organizations.

"American higher education is a many-splendored creation." -- Derek Bok

Each fall semester, Les makes time to instruct a section of new students in University 101, getting to know them personally and helping them to develop the knowledge and skills that will help them to be successful students and contributing members of society.  Les believes passionately in the value of a liberal arts education, and helps his students understand the meaning and value of  being liberally educated.

"Learning humanizes character and does not permit it to be cruel." -- Motto of the University of South Carolina (Emollit mores nec sinit esse feros)

Les' personal home page describes his family, hobbies, background, and interests more fully and is available by clicking on the following link:
