GIOVANNI A. VLAHOS

Head Soccer Coach
Athletic Department

Giovanni Vlahos begins his first year at USC Sumter as the Head Men's and Women's Soccer Coach.

Coach Vlahos is of Italian and Greek heritage, and grew up in Livorno, Italy, a seaside town in the Tuscany region of the country. He moved to the United States at the age of 15, and attended 71st High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Giovanni accepted a soccer scholarship at Wingate University, playing for two years before transferring to UNC-Wilmington.

Upon graduating from UNC-Wilmington, Giovanni signed a one year professional contract with Patras of the Greek Second Division. After his first year, Giovanni moved on to another Second Division team in Corfu, Greece.

Upon conclusion of an unexpected, shortened professional career, Giovanni once again crossed the Atlantic to try his hand at acting in Los Angeles, California.

Giovanni spent six years chasing his dream of becoming an actor. After being selected for bit roles in soaps, commercials, music videos, game shows, and independent movies, he decided to concentrate on coaching soccer full time.

Giovanni then settled in as the head men's soccer coach of the JV program at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California.

Laguna Beach High School men's soccer enticed Giovanni to leave Mira Costa High School after two years and join their school as the Program's Director and Head Men's Varsity soccer coach.

Seeking a jump to the next level, Giovanni returned to Greece in a coaching apprenticeship as 2"d Assistant Coach at lonikos Diavaton in the Macedonian Football Union for 6 months.

During the past year, he has been the Head Coach for both the Men's and Women's soccer team at USC Salkehatchie.

In addition to English, Giovanni speaks Italian, Greek and Spanish. Giovanni and his wife, Melissa, reside in Columbia.
