CLAUDE J. EICHELBERGER

Colonel Claude J. Eichelberger was born in Columbia, South Carolina and is the son of the late Claud and Corinne Eichelberger. His mother resides in Columbia, S.C. He attended Waverly and W.H. Burton Elementary schools, W. A. Perry Middle school and graduated from C. A. Johnson High school in Columbia, S.C.

He began his military career in November 1967, as an enlistee in the United States Army. He served one tour in Vietnam and in 1973, joined the 240th Combat Communications Squadron of the South Carolina Air National Guard.

He was selected to attend the Academy of Military Science in 1974. After successful completion in February 1975, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant becoming the first African-American commissioned officer in South Carolina Air National Guard.

He has served as 169th Fighter Wing Social Actions officer, State Social Actions officer assigned to Headquarters South Carolina Air National Guard, Commander of the 169th Mission Support Flight, Commander of the 169th Support Group, and Headquarters South Carolina Air National Guard Support Group Commander.

Colonel Eichelberger has Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Business Administration from The University of South Carolina and a Master of Arts in Computer Resources and Information Management from Webster University.

He is a graduate of the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College.
His military decorations include:

Colonel Eichelberger retired from the South Carolina Air National Guard on April 30, 2003.

He retired from Computer Sciences Corporation on June 11, 2004, with 30 years of service. While with CSC his primary duties included computer system management, computer security management, technical consulting, and project management. He was responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and support of Process and Quality management systems and with the ISO 9001 Standard compliance. His duties also included database design, implementation, and maintenance.

Colonel Eichelberger serves as a member of the South Carolina State Museum Commission. He is also a member of the Governor’s Higher Education Study Committee. He formerly served as a member of Governor’s Higher Education Task Force, the Kershaw County United Way Board, and the Girl Scout Board.

Currently, he is an Instructor of Computer Science in the Division of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering at the University of South Carolina Sumter. He and his wife, Delores Butler Eichelberger, reside in Camden, S.C.
