Having grown up a military “brat” and now the spouse of an Air Force officer, Kathy has lived in and visited many interesting and unusual places around the world. After graduating from Kaiserslautern American High School in Germany, she attended Louisiana Tech University where she majored in Home Economics with an emphasis in Fashion Merchandising and a minor in Marketing.
She worked in the retail business following gradation as an assistant buyer for Junior & Misses Sportswear and later a buyer of lingerie and fashion director for a store in Louisiana, but she felt the calling to a career in higher education. It was while she was Director of Student Activities at Centenary College she met her husband, Don, who at that time was a senior at the school. Little did she know the wild blue yonder would beckoned and her gypsy lifestyle would return.
Kathy has worked in education for over 20 years with majority of her career spent working with non-traditional adult students. Besides her position at Centenary College, she was the Director of the Troy State University Program at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, where she also received her Masters of Science in Foundations of Education degree. In San Antonio, Texas, she was the Recruiter/High School Dual Credit advisor at Palo Alto College, a culturally diverse school with a large population of first generation college students. While stationed in Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, Kathy was the Center Director for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and before coming to work for USC Sumter, Kathy was the Site Manager for The University of Oklahoma’s Washington, D.C. site for five years and served last year as a program developer for OU while her husband attended War College in Montgomery, Alabama. When living in the DC metro area she served three years as treasurer of the Washington Education Coalition of Adults Returning to Education and was a founding member and treasure for Virginia Out-of-State, Non-Profit Colleges and Universities.
Kathy and Don have one son, Christopher, who keeps them on their toes and makes sure life is never dull. Her hobbies include traveling, gourmet cooking, reading and beating her husband to the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle. She is thrilled to be part of the USC Sumter family. Go Fire Ants!
