USC Sumter Announces New Mascot for
Intercollegiate Athletics (March 8, 2007)
(Sumter, SC) After several months of polling students, alumni, faculty, staff and various community groups, USC Sumter has finally settled on a new mascot.
“What beast instills fear throughout the deep south?” Athletic Director Bruce Blumberg asks. “The dreaded fire ant, of course!”
Although it may take some a little time to adjust to it, the Fire Ant is the perfect mascot for a team itching to make its start in the NJCAA Region 10. Men’s baseball and women’s softball will be the first two teams to wear the Fire Ant uniform beginning in the 2007-08 academic year. “We had several different options ranging from the Trumpeters to the Spurs, but ultimately, the Fire Ants won the competition,” Blumberg said.
USC Sumter Dean C. Leslie Carpenter announced in October 2006 the return of Intercollegiate Athletics to USC Sumter. Competitive sports have not been on campus since the 1970s, when the mascot was The Partisans and the school colors were purple and white. USC Sumter has retained that mascot until the announcement was made Monday.
“We felt it was time to choose a mascot that reflects USC Sumter today and the goals we seek to achieve,” Dr. Carpenter said. “The Fire Ants represent more than a group of individuals, but a group which works together to very effectively achieve one common goal.”
The new colors for USC Sumter Intercollegiate Athletics will be garnet and white.

USC Sumter Brings Back Intercollegiate Athletics
Attention Prospective Athletes Please fill out the Recruitment Questionnaire so we can keep you informed.
(Sumter, SC) The University of South Carolina Sumter announced Monday, October 30, 2006 the return of intercollegiate athletics to the campus.
In August, USC Sumter Dean C. Leslie Carpenter sought comments and suggestions from both internal and external audiences regarding sports on campus. After studying many successful intercollegiate athletics models for other two-year institutions such as USC Sumter, Dean Carpenter made the decision to pursue a sports program beginning in Fall 2007.
Athletic programs flourished at the USC Sumter campus in the 1970s with successful programs ranging from baseball and basketball to golf and tennis. “We firmly believe that the return of competitive sports at USC Sumter will not only positively affect our enrollment, but will have many other benefits for the institution, our students and the community we serve,” Dr. Carpenter said.
USC Sumter will join Region 10 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
